Tonia Marie Brown-Palmer of Nassau, Bahamas is the oldest of five children, all of whom entered Bahamas Academy when her parents, James Otis (deceased) and Joan Brown accepted the invitation of one of the teachers. This was Tonia’s first encounter with the Seventh-day Adventists. Shortly after her graduation, she became a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church because of the principles she learnt at Bahamas Academy, and the exposure to the Christian home of Drs. Wendell & Althea McMillan.
Immediately afterward her baptism, Tonia became involved in the work of evangelism through teaching the Primary Sabbath School class at the Maranatha Seventh-day Adventist Church. She also sang in the choir, joined the Pathfinder Club, and later was invested as a Master Guide. She currently serves as Pathfinder Director, Stewardship director, Internet Ministry director, and Sabbath School Lower Division Teacher at the Eight Mile Rock Seventh-day Adventist Church. Previously, she was Sabbath School Superintendent, Church Clerk and Assistant Women’s Ministries Director.
Upon completion of the Bachelor of Science Degree with an emphasis in Accounting at Northern Caribbean University (formerly West Indies College), Tonia graduated as president of her class. She immediately joined her parents in their business, gaining valuable experience for her first job at the Broadcasting Corporation of the Bahamas as an Accountant. Shortly after relocating to Grand Bahama in 1992, she was employed as Financial Manager at the Nassau Guardian (The Freeport News) 1844 Ltd, then worked at the Underwater Explorer Society (UNEXSO) before accepting the position as Accountant at the North Bahamas Mission of Seventh-day Adventists in 2008. Recently, the Executive Committee of the North Bahamas Conference appointed her to serve as Treasurer. Mrs. Tonia Palmer is privileged to be the first female treasurer of the North Bahamas Conference of Seventh-day Adventists and in the Adventist Church in the Bahamas. She plans to continue her academic and professional preparation, and leave a legacy for aspiring young women, whatever their vocation.
Tonia’s philosophy to do the best she can with God’s help and never compromise her religious beliefs for personal gain. One of her favourite texts and hymn of praise are Proverbs 3:5: “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not to thy own understanding;” and “My hope is build on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness.”
